Standing Desk and Weight Loss

How to Stay Healthy and Lose Weight Standing at Work

Obesity is becoming increasingly common across the U.S., with recent studies confirming that one of the main causes, alongside bad eating habits, is our sedentary lifestyles. A Stanford University study indicated that an increasing number of Americans have stopped doing any sort of exercise, largely due to lack of time and the rise of sedentary activities both at home and at work.

As a business owner, especially if you’re running a workplace that unintentionally encourages a sedentary behavior, you need to make sure your employees are healthy, happy and productive. Sitting up for too long leads to obesity and other major health problems, which can result in significant costs for your business in terms of an unproductive workforce, insurance policies, workers compensation, and other related expenses.

So how can you encourage a more active lifestyle at the office without disrupting workflow? According to research, it’s easier than you think: by allowing your employees to stand up more often throughout the day. Read on to find out how you or your workers can lose weight standing at work.

Sitting down for too long damages your body

A Tel Aviv University study that analyzed the build up of fat at cellular level concluded that sitting down for too long is one of the main causes of cellular expansion and fat production.

The research shows that fat cells exposed to sustained pressure such as when you sit down for long periods of time end up expanding by almost 50%. The more time you spend sitting down the more likely you to accumulate more fat in your backside or lower half of the body.

This can pose a serious health risk, as obesity is linked to numerous conditions that are among the leading causes of preventable deaths in the U.S. and globally: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and various types of cancer, according to Center for Disease Control and Prevention statistics.

How to lose weight standing at work

One way of fighting weight gain and the associated risks, especially useful for people who don’t have the time to exercise too often, is to spend more time standing up. Based on a recent study run by the University of Chester in the UK, it’s actually not that difficult to lose weight standing at work. The research showed that by simply spending three or four hours a day standing at work people can burn more calories, increase their muscle activity and metabolism, with significant benefits for their overall health. The study found that standing up can help burn roughly 50 calories per hour, which would amount to roughly 30,000 calories per year, or 8 pounds of fat. In activity levels, this would be the equivalent of running 10 marathons per year, experts said.

By using a standing desk or a desktop converter which would allow your employees to work standing up you can encourage a more active working environment and ultimately have a healthier, happier and more productive workforce. Here are some of the weight loss benefits associated with the use of standing desks or similar equipment at your workplace:

  • Increased heart rate, which promotes burning calories
  • Burning three times more calories standing up than sitting
  • Improved circulation, posture and back & core strength
  • Losing up to 8-10 pounds per year solely by standing up a few hours every day

If you’re still on the fence about making this investment for the health and productivity of your employees, get in touch with a standing desk company to find out more about what they do and how they can help. experts are available to answer all your questions and assist you in making the right decision for your business.
